Burley Lagoon’s Shores & Its People
The Burley Lagoon is bordered by the three census designated places: Burley, Purdy and Wauna. In total these three locations are home to just under 9,000 people and include parts of the Kitsap and Key Peninsulas in Washington State. This thriving area is a collection of small businesses, farmlands and residential settings.
The original inhabitants that used the Lagoon for harvesting, fishing and clamming were the Squaxine Island Tribe - Noo-Seh-Chatl “People of the water”, the Puyallup Tribe - puyaləpabš “People from the bend at the bottom of the river”, and the Nisqually Tribe - dx"sqwali? abs “People of the river, people of the grass”. They were all forced to sign the Treaty of Medicine Creek in 1854 and to sell over the majority of their lands to the US government. The government relocated these people onto small reservations and in years hence, further took more their land without consent. Homesteaders began settling this area in the 1880’s and established logging and tobacco farming industries.
Land Acknowlegement
We gratefully honor and acknowledge that we rest on the traditional lands of the Coast Salish People. The Coast Salish people have lived on this land since the beginning of time. They are still here today. They live, work, raise their children, take care of their community, practice their traditional ways and speak the Twulshootseed language – just as their ancestors did.

GoFundMe
Our wonderful historic Burley Community Hall is due for a roof replacement. This building is the heart of the community that hosts many different functions such as Meals on Wheels, AA groups, private rentals, holiday events, and religious gatherings.
This building residing next to the Burley Post Office is over 100 years old and has witnessed many happenings and changes over the last century. As with any structure at this age, many repairs and upgrades need to happen to keep it available for community use.
We need your financial support to help us maintain this iconic building. Please consider donating any amount and share with others in the community.
Sincerely,
Burley Library Association
